Here’s What to Expect from an Online Tarot Reading

First time getting a tarot reading? Here’s what it might look like.

If you’ve never worked with an online tarot reader before, you might not know what a typical reading looks like. Does your reader use virtual cards? Do you have to meet via video chat? Do you have to interpret your own results?

No, nope, and no. Tarot readings are very comfortable, relaxed environments. Here’s what to expect:

1) Establish A Goal

What are you looking to learn from your tarot reading?

To connect with your inner spirit and outward desires, your online tarot reader will want to know what your goals are going into the reading. Before meeting with your reader, ponder your own personal reasons for having your tarot read, such as:

  • You want an answer to a specific question
  • You’re looking for a vision of your future
  • You’d like help reflecting on or digesting an experience

And if you don’t have any specific goals: that’s okay too! Some of the keenest insights come from a place of neutrality and non-judgment. Your tarot reader can still ask questions and make interpretations to help guide you along your journey of discovery.

2) Pick a Tarot Deck

Did you know there are at least five tarot decks commonly used by tarot readers?

Each tarot deck contains unique cards, illustrations, and meanings, all of which can impact the feelings and insights you gain from your reading. These are the five most common decks:

  • Rider-Waite Deck: This is the classic, 78-card tarot deck you’ve probably seen in movies and local shops. It’s perfect for folks who are new to tarot.
  • Thoth Tarot: Developed by famous occultist Aleister Crowley, this deck is a better fit for people with an interest in Wiccan and other magic practices.
  • The Wild Unknown: Created in 2012 by artist Kim Krans, this tarot deck uses the influence of animal spirits to guide its readers and is great for animal lovers.
  • The Enchanted Tarot: Designed to reveal insights into your immediate questions, this deck is perfect for people with a specific question they’d like answered.
  • The New Mythic Tarot: Perfect for history buffs, this deck replaces many of the lesser-known figures and spirits from the Rider-Waite deck with Greek gods and goddesses.

Before your reader begins to shuffle, ask them about their tarot deck options.

3) Select a Spread

There are multiple ways to shuffle and reveal a tarot deck.

Spread patterns affect the number of cards your reader will interpret, as well as the ways the cards are interpreted. Two of the more popular spreads are:

  • Three-Card Spread: Standing in for your past, present, and future, this three-card spread is a great way to experience your first tarot reading.
  • Celtic Cross Spread: With this information-heavy, 10-card spread, tarot readers can help their customers tackle a specific problem or work towards a goal. It’s a great step-up spread for people who have tried tarot before.

When first meeting with an online tarot reader, ask them which card spread they’re familiar with. Most readers will walk you through their spread options and explain how each spread will impact your reading.

4) Manifest, Conceptualize, or Concentrate

Even online, the conscience and subconscious thoughts, emotions, and desires of the subject of the reading affect the outcome.

When meeting with an online tarot reader, they may ask you to conceptualize, manifest, or concentrate while they shuffle and spread the cards. If you’re new to tarot, we recommend you simply think about a goal or question you have. Whatever you find natural and comfortable is always the truest path.
